School Traing

I went up to the school today to do some training. I worked on precisions, jump ups, landings and climb ups.

I really need to work on my climb ups.

Backyard Training

I did some trsining in my backyard yesterday. I was going to do my normal routine of precisions, landings and jump heights.

I started with the precisions. I started on the bench and concrete slab. The bench was starting to ease and crack a bit. Not wanting to break it, I walked around my backyard looking for somewhere else to practice precisions. After looking aroudn for 10 minutes, I found a start under a tree, jumping from a concrete slab to a wooden log. The distance is about 8 ft. I planned on doing my normal 100, but on the 72nd, my left leg slipped out. I felt a strain in my lower right shin, so I stopped my training there.

Because I didn't do that much training today, I plan on going up to the school to do a more hardcose session. This will hopefully involve the normal precisions, landings and height jumps, but will hopefully also involve climb ups and balancing (if I can find somewhere to practice balance). Let's see how it goes.

Progression vs Sampler

I recently asked the question, what makes a progression video different from a samper.

I asked a few people and have finally come up with a definition, that relates to parkour. Chippa was a major help with this.

Sampler:

A sampler shows the traceur at their peek performance, doing their best moves. It shows other people the skill level that the traceur is currently at, without showing how the traceur got there.

Progression:

A progression video demonstrates the skill of the traceur, while also showing how the traceur got there. It is a training implement for the traceur to use to gain advice from others as well as teach others.
It may show the traceur performing various movements from various angles, so that the traceur can be given the best advice for improvement.
It may also show how the traceur builds up to their current skill level, how they work their way up to bigger moves. That way the traceur can teach others how they train and learn new techniques.

This is the best definitions I can currently think of, I may edit them later in the future.

In regards to these definitions, I've realised that the video that I am making, is more a progression video than a sampler. I will be showing movements from different angles, so that I can be given advice on improvement. It will also show how I build up to bigger movements, like double cat passes and cat pass to arm jumps. It will also have some sampler-like tendencies, such as showing big movements, but I will also be showing how I worked towards achieving these movements.

I plan to release a video every 6 months or so, that way I can properly document the progression in my training.

I should hopefully have the video done in the next few weeks. I plan on finishing the filming in this coming week, then finish the editing in the two weeks after that.

Back from the Coast

I'm back from the coast.

During my trip, I tried to do a bit of training. This mainly involved my new training format, of drilling techniques. This involved precisions, landings and height jumps, but at extreme repetitions.

I head off ot Fiji in 6 days, and in those 6 days, I hope to be able to finish the filming for my progression video. That way I will be able to edit it when I get back from Fiji.

I've also been asking myself the question, of what makes a progression video a "progression" video. As in what sets it apart from a sampler, or what makes it unique. I'll probably need to talk to a few people about it, and then be able to make up my own definition. The reason I am asking this question, is because I don't want to go around saying that my new video is a progression video, when it instead turns out more as a sampler. By knowing the answer to this, I can decide whether my new video will be a progression video, or a sampler.

See what happens.

A New Mindset

I recently finished reading Blane's Parkour blog.

An article that should especially be noted is 'When Worlds Collide.'
http://blane-parkour.blogspot.com/2007/11/when-worlds-collide.html

It really got me thinking about the way I train. I've taken a few points from it that I plan on applying to my own training.

A little while back, I made a training program for myself, that focussed around parkour and exercises to improve parkour. Blane spoke about not having any set regimes for parkour training, jsut listen to your body and train in the areas that are not tired. Like if your arms are tired, train things that don't require your arms working hard, like precisions and balancing. I've now decided to not follow any set program, except for Friday Night Conditioning, just go out and do parkour using the body parts that aren't exhausted.

Blane also talked about the best way to improve your parkour, this being drilling movements. For example, to get better at precisions, do precisions, to get better at climb ups, do climb ups. I've been telling people that pull ups and dips are great dexercises to improve your climb ups. Now that I think about it, the best way to improve your climb ups, is to go out and do climb ups. I've now decided to not go to the gym, but to go out and do parkour more regularly.

Blane also talked about how drilling technique si the best way to improve. Nolt drilling as in ten times in a row, but 50 times, 100 TIMES. And also keep focus and concentrating through each movement, even though I'm getting tired in the process.

After reading Blane's blog, I went out to give this drilling idea a go.

I did 100 pecisions between a chair and a concrete landing, 50 each way. My goal was to stick my lanings. As well as landing silently on the concrete landing, and landing on the edge of the chair, without it moving. i focussed on my breathing, and getting height into my precisions.

During APA classes, we get the students to do 50 landings from a small height. This way they will condition their bodies for bigger landings. I now realise that while I've been telling students to do this, I haven't actually been applying it to myself. I thought why not start now, so I did 50 landings from a small height, focussing on silence, technique and breathing.

After this, I practised jumping up onto my table, which is about 1.5 metres high. I did this 50 times in a row.

At the end of the session, I foudn that Iw as extreemmly tired, but i felt that I was on to something great for my progression.

From now on, I'm going to try to get out and do some parkour training every day, if only for an hour. Toast will be a really go area to practice precisions and arm jumps, the bottom of customs will be a good palce to practice high standing jumps, and the rail at the old bus depot in civic, will be good for practicing balance. There is also a good wall there to practice climb ups. Im going to try to drill techniques at huge amounts, like 50 or 100 times per session, focussing on my technqiue. I can even go out and do this by myself. Solo training hasn't been to appealing to me, so this will just be another test for me. Weekends can then be for training with other people, and applying my training to different environments.

I'm also keen to go out to do some night runs, like follow the leader type sessions.

Im heading to the coast today, and I plan on starting my new training idea while I'm down there.

In summary I plan to train more regularly, doing more drilling in technique, whilst also listening to my body to decide what technique i will train.

APA Basics Class - Belco

Today we had our last APA class for the year. It was run in belco and was pretty wet. Tops to the group of people who showed up, even though it was raining.

We had a games sessions, doing activities that required parkour to be incorporated. One game was fly, which involved lunging increasing distances. The other game was capture the flag.

Both games were a big hit. Maybe we should have games sessions more regularly. Maybe even two months or so.

My hands are still playing up a bit, we'll just have to see how they go.

Civic & Belco Training

Did some training yesterday.

Started in civic. I met up with Eliot and was planning on doing a lot of filming, but I injured my hand again. The injury is only on the palm of my hand now. I may have bruised it or something. Hopefully it gets better soon. This then restricted me from doing much afterwards. We met up with Dave S from Melbourne and trained at DEWR for a bit.

Later that afternoon, we met up in belco for some instructor training and filming. I did some filming in a gorilla suit. We got some good footage and photos. Then the instructors met up and we decided what we were going to teach at the class today.

It rained last night, and it's still pretty wet outside. Hopefully it dries up before the class, we'll just have to see what happens.

FNC

I've just gotten back into training, after a months break. The break was due to work related commitments, and letting my wrist heal properly.

I went to FNC last night for the first time in a while. My fitness hasn't decreased too much, but I will have to keep training to get back to the level of training I used to have.

APA Civic Class + Training

Taught a class in civic today. Only had a small turnout of about 11 people, half were new. Taught climb ups and precisions for techniques. We also played some parkour tag. Overall it wasn't too bad a session.

While we were warming up, a guy who is involved in circus came over and had a chat with us. He asked us what we were doing, and we talked to him a bit about parkour. I gave him my details, with an APA business card. Maybe there is some potential ffor bigger things. Circus parkour would be cool.

Afterwards we did some training at toast. My wrist still hasn't properly healed. It acts up a bit when doing vaults, so I focussed on precisions. My precisions have improved, and I am able to stick my landings. Im now able to get more height into them, I just need to be able to transfer this when I do longer precisions. Practice makes perfect.

Progression Video Filming - Belco

Started filming for my progression video today. Eliot and me hit up Belco for a few hours. We got straight into it, getting some good filming done. I also worked into showing progression in how I build up to bigger movements.

The session didn't end on the brighest note. When doing the cat pass to arm jump at the library, I bashed the palm of my hand on the wall, when finishing the arm jump. It's a bit bruised, hopefully it's nothing serious.

There is still a few more things I want to film in belco, which I will have to go do at a later date.

ruoF Filming

I didn't plan on doing any training yesterday, but found myself getting filmed for ruoF's media assignment. He was making a music video. We filmed around civic, hitting up toast, noise wall, dewer, and various spots along the way. It was a good session, lasting a few hours.

APA Belco Class + Belco Training

Taught a class in Belconnen today. It was a really good class. We only had 16 participants, and didn't make that much money, but we're getting better as instructors. I think that we have finally developed a good format to run our classes. All we have to do now is get better as instructors. I invited Rus to come along, to see how we were as instructors. He said that we did a good job, but there is still room for improvement, as there should be. I got Eliot to film the class, so that we can see how we look as instructors from a third person perspective. Bringing a jug of water was a big hit. We're really starting to improve in how we run the classes.

Afterwards, a few of us hung around for some training. I tried a few new things. I got the cat pass to arm jump off the bridge at the library. My climb ups are also improving. I think I may have the confidence to try the arm jump at the derro apartments. So far only Ruz has tried it, yet along achieved it.

I also met a stuntman who's friends with Jarrod. I'd met him before, at a jam last year. He said that he's building a warehouse for stuntmen, and would like traceurs to use it as well. We'll see what develops from here, but it would be good if we got an indoor area that we could train at, then slowly bring classes to.

Overall it was an awesome day, and at the end of it I was exhausted.

FNC

Had FNC two nights ago. It was a good session, and I was exhausted at the end.

Civic Training

Met up with Josh, Hef and ruoF today for some training in civic. It was hard training in the heat, as energy was used up quickly.

I got a new cat pass to precision in toast. How I built up to it was good, as I started with doing the cat-pass, then "craning" it, then actually doing the cat pass to precision. I did it a few times, to make sure I could. I think even stuck the landing, once or twice.

I tried the tree lathce at noise wall. I couldn't get it, but I'll just have to keep on trying.

I got some good advice from Ruz, when we met him yesterday. I didn't actually hear him say it, but Josh told me it today. Ruz said, that as we've been training for three years now, we should be looking for newer and more advanced things to do. This makes a lot of sense, and I have found that I am startign to do a lot of new things. Bigger things too. I know that there is more out there for me to try, and I'm starting to develop the mental confidence to actually try. The progression video should be good for me to try new things, or at least make some progression to them.

Belco Training

Met up with Ruz, Josh and Conan yesterday for some training in belco. Hit up a few spots, just like old times. I also got a few things for the first time. This included proper climbs and double cat passes. My climb ups have a lot of room for improvement, but I can do them properly now. I've also found an arm jump in the derro apartments, that I can progress up to.

FNC

Had FNC tonight. It wasn't at as great an intensity as last week. We got rained out. I am finding that I can do the exercises a lot easier, which shows that my fitness is improving.

Holder Gym Parkour

Went to Holder gym last night. Did a bit of this and that. We even taught some guys cat-passes. The major focus of the session ended up being double cat passes. The difference for this time from the others, is that we got the whole floor space. We set up the blocks without any crash mats, for the first time. The biggest distances we hit were 7 feet. We got some footage of it too, to show everyone how big we've been doing them.

Parkour Progression Videos

I've decided to start documenting my progression in training through parkour progression videos. If I make one every couple of months, I will be able to get a good idea as to how my training has progresses over time.

I'll start filming the first one after my uni exams finish.

Saturday, November 3, 2007

APA Basics Class - Civic

Taught a class today. It was raining in the beginning, but we still had an okay turnout, 14 people. We're getting the warmups done properly. We worked on cat passes and precisions. The conditioning, that everyone hates. They'll later understand how important conditioning is. We made it a free class, as the conditions were pretty dodgy. Overall it was a good lesson.

Friday Night Conditioning (FNC)

Friday Night Conditioning (FNC) last night was awesome. I was able to really push myself. Everybody was able to push themselves at whatever level they were comfortable with. I was even able to get the stair pushup wheelbarrows. I felt so good after getting it. If I can do this on a regular basis, I know that it will help me dramatically. It will help me both with my parkour as well as PT.

Thursday, November 1, 2007

Holder Gym Parkour

Went to Holder gym last night. Did some more big stuff. I think that I am starting to get confident enough to try double cat passes outside. I know the perfect block to try them on first. I also got my reverse cat passes back. I even tried some cat pass to precisions on the beams. I need to practice them on the lower beam more, then I'll move up to the level beam.

Project Mayhem - Mission 1

Today I did Mission 1 of Project Mayhem. The missions died out back before, but now that there are a lot of people who are starting to get serious with their training, I think they might be able to keep on going.

The first mission was to pick a spot 3km away from your home, then run there and run back. You had to try to keep in a straight line for the run.

I decided to run to the top of Mt Ainslie from the base. I got a few friends to tag along, but it was a lot harder than i expected. The hill got extremely steep, and bush bashing didn't help. We made it to the top in about half an hour. We weren't able to run the whole way, but that could be expected because of the steepness of the hill. We made it back down in much less of the time, as it was down-hill all the way.

Overall it was an awesome session, and I feel like I've really accomplished something.

Spontaneous Parkour

While in Sydney for my work function, I found some kids doing some parkour near China Town. I had the massive urge to join in, and pulled off a few big things for my mates. I also got a few cheers from the crowd that had developed out of nowhere. Good times all round.

Thursday, October 25, 2007

Holder Gym Parkour

Went to Holder gym last night. I got to practice a lot of really big things. Started out with small things like precisions here and there. This soon moved on to vaults when the floor was clear. The vaults started small, but when the double cat passes started, things really started to happen. I now have the confidence to try double cat passes after last nights session. We had the coloured blocks at their vertical sides, with a distance of 9 feet between the blocks. 9 FEET!! I didn't get the landings with the big ones, crashing to the mat instead. Im keen to try them outside now, and will give them a go when I train in belco next.

APA Basics Class - Belco

Taught a class today.

The was a much smaller turnout than last class.. We had 21 people show up, 7 of which had come before. Wasn't too bad a class in the end. We did have an injury occur while practicing rolls. I think she may have bruised her collar bone. I put it in a sling, gave her some ice then her friends took her home. Im bring in Travis, Hef and Eliot as assisstant instructors, and ruoF whill be training to become an assisstant instructor. He just needs to get some more experience before he can start teaching.

My strength is getting a lot better. I was able to do clapping pushups up the stairs during the conditioning.

Overall the class was good and a lot of people said they will be coming back. Some were really exhausted after the conditioning, but there is good reason behind why we do it.

National Conserve 2007 - Melbourne (5 - 7 October)

I've just gotten back from the National Conserve. It was so great!

The amount of training I did was awesome. I'm so tired! I also got to meet heaps of people and spend some time talking with Chippa. He said that he'll be coming down to Canberra to train with us and see whether we can become qualified APA instructors. It also got to improve my skill in a lot of techniques, as well as improve my self-confidence, especially with balancing.

Saturday was the main event, where we were split up into four groups. We then trained all over Melbourne, the hospital scaffolding and the Chinese gardens would have to be highlights for the day. The session lasted for about 8 hours. We then met up later that night for a stealth session. This involved a session of follow-the-leader, giving a lot of focus to balancing.

The next day a class was run. It lasted for about 3 hours, but it was a really intense session. I was already extremely exhausted from the day before, so I had to push myself. The conditioning in the class was also extremely intense.

Overall National Conserve 2007 was awesome. I had the best time. There is even talk of National Jam being held in Canberra next year, but we'll have to see what happens.

NATJAM WOOHOO!!!!

Physical Training Milestone

Today I accomplished a milestone in physical training. It was not parkour related, but I feel it is an achievement to be noted.

During work PT, we were doing an aquathon. Basically it involves a lot of laps of running and then swimming. I pushed myself so far that I vomitted.

This was the first time I had ever vomitted during a physical training session of any type and I am proud of myself for finally pushing myself over the limit.

Parkour Week Day 8 - Grand Finale

Today was the last day for my parkour week, and day 3 of the parkour long weekend.

The day started with teaching the APA class in civic. Before today we've had a maximum turnout of 8 people to our classes. Today we had about 40 people show up. Only 3 had been before. Just comes to show how much influence the parkour on 60 Minutes had. The class was a success, and lots of participants said that they enjoyed it.

Afterwards we did some training in civic, but I had to leave early to help out my dad.

Overall my parkour week has been really awesome. My knees haven't hurt, and my abs are feeling pretty good. I'm really tired but know that I can rest all week before NatJam '07 next week. I can't wait.

Training Goals

I'm going to set some goals for myself to achieve at some point. The movements are of a high level, and I hope to be able to train my body up to them. I can nearly achieve them, but in order to, I will have to push myself that one step further.

Belconnen: Arm Jump at the Silver Cubes
Civic: Cat Pass to Arm Jump at Toast
Tuggeranong: Wall Run at Car Park of Hyperdome
Woden: Cat Pass to Arm Jump at Black Ramps

I will only have accomplished these if I can do them at least four times during a session.

Parkour Week Day 7 - Belco Training

Today was day two of the Parkour Long Weekend.

Again there was another small turnout, today we had 4 people turn up.

It was a light session today. Did a bit of drills, but mainly play. Got some good foot-trials, but my foot hurt a bit, i think from hitting the walol too hard. I got a few scratches, and had a few bails. I was lucky enough to be able to catch myself in the bails, and didn't come out too bad. Im guessing my parkour-subconsious has developed to react faster.

Overall the session wasn't too bad. I got to do a few good things. The session lasted for about 4 hours. It was more of a jam than a training session. Which is good though as it develops the comunal aspects that Canberra Parkour is famous for.

I'll have to organise specific training sessions, such as sessions only for the APA Instructors. I hope that these sessions will be performed at a high intensity, developing ourselves physically and mentally. I'd like them to be a lot like the session I had with Conan in Belco last thursday.

Friday, September 28, 2007

Parkour Week Day 6 - Woden Training

Today was the start of the Parkour Long Weekend, which will be the finale for my Parkour Week.

There was only a small turn out. Three people including me. I had never met them before, so it was good to meet new traceurs in Canberra.

The session lasted for about two and a half hours. We travelled to a lot of locations around woden. Some that I had never seen before. I worked on a variety of drills, and pulled of a couple of big things.

Overall the session was not a awesome as I hoped it would be, but it was still good.

Parkour Week Day 5 - Tuggers Training

Met up with John and Chris today. I already knew John from an APA class he came to, but I met Chris for the first time. They both have a lot of skill and potential. I found out that John has actually been doing parkour for at least a year, as he was at last years NatJam.

Training today was pretty laid back. My body has been getting tired and my abs are killing me. Worked on a few drills and found some new spots aruond tuggers. I got my hand up on the wall, in the carpark, that I had not tried yet. I also got some pretty good laches down, swigining from one bar up to another bar. Height gave me an advantage though.

Overall it was an okay session, got to meet some new people and trained at a moderate level for about an hour and a half.

The parkour long weekend starts tomorrow. I hope that my body is up for it.

Parkour Week Day 4 - Belco and Gym Training

This post is for yesterday.

The corporate class was cancelled, due to too many participants dropping out because of sickness. Good news is that they want to re-schedule for another time. More people are interested in coming, and they are happy to o it on a weekend.

Started off with some training in Belco with Conan. Did some more intensive training, going through various drills. This mainly involved rolls, cat-passes, arm jumps and cat balance. I also completed the ramp endurance test, which I had never finished before. The session only lasted for about an hour, but it was at a reasonably high intensity, and a lot was accomplished.

Later that night went to Holder gym wioth Travis. Worked on more drills, vaults and precisions mainly. I can finally do double cat-passes. We were doing them to a pretty big distance too. I measured 7 feet between the blocks. Worked on palm spins a bit. I got my one hand reverse palm spins back. I tried to do some reverse cat-passes as well, but couldn't psyche myself up to fully do them.

Overall it was an awesome day involving training to a reasonably high intensity.

Wednesday, September 26, 2007

Parkour Week Day 3 - Aranda Training

Did some training at Aranda Oval today. While my little sister was doing some running training, I was looking around at the two schools for parkour potential. The playgrounds have a bit of potential, and I'll have to test them out further.

I found a electrical block thing by the side of the oval, with a row of logs in front of it. The block was about a metre wide and shoulder height. I spent the time drilling different vaults over the block, such as cat-passes and kashes. I also worked on coordinating running launchers from the logs.

The training only lasted for about half an hour, 45 minutes, but i'm now 3 for 3.

Parkour Week Day 2 - Civic Training with Conan

Met up with Conan today during his break from uni.

Trained a bit in civic, mainly toast. Found a new cat-pass to arm-jump at toast to wrok up towards. It will require a reasonable amount of distance gained from the cat-pass.

Worked on precisions as well. Working on landing on the balls of my feet, and improving sticking my landings. My distances still need to be worked on. So far I can only get 9 feet. I'm keen to try rail precisions, but only where I can do them safely first. Such as if the raisl were at ground level, so that if I missed, I would land straight on flat ground. Conan said there's a spot that we can do this, I'll have to get him to show me.

Checked out the ramps outside the Canberra Theatre. They weren't as interesting as I thought. The tops of the ledges were really smooth. Found a good block next to it. Was a bit above shoulder height. We were able to drill pop monkey-plants and foot-trials on it.

Conan then showed me the set of ramps near the bus interchange. They looked really good, but it was outside a restaurant, which meant there were a lot of people around. I'll have to check it out on a weekend.

Today was day 2 of my mega parkour week. It hasn't been as "mega" as I planned, as in the sessions have been pretty short, but I have trained 2 for 2 days now. I hope to do at least half an hour of training every day until I go back to uni. Lets see what happens.

Parkour Week Day 1 - First of Many to Come

Went out for some solo training today. It felt weird drilling basics by myslef with randoms walking past. The session only lasted for about 45 minutes, with nothing too serious or extensive. I'm slowly building up to the bigger stuff.

My cold has been heaps annoying, with coughing fits and getting tired quickly.

I did some more training back at home. This mainly focused on rolls and precisions.

I even tried some rolls on concrete. This was the first time I had ever tried this, as I have always been scared that they would hurt heaps. I now know that there wasn't that much to worry about. Sure they hurt a bit, but they weren't as painful as I thought they would be. They're also help in directly teaching me on where my rolls need to be improved, as in which parts of my roll I need yo change. This was done through the areas that hurt being the ones I need to change.

My precisions are getting better than what they used to be. Im reaching a distance of 9 of my feet, from a slightly elevated height. I can already feel the DOMS building up in my abs. Im also sticking my precisions better. I slipped out on the last one but managed to catch myself before falling.

We've been approached by a corporation who want us to run a private class for them on thursday. Of course we accepted. It looks like it might only be Conan and me teaching, as Josh works full time, but I'll have to check with him.

Parkour has really had a boom since it was shown on 60 minutes. The segment by 60 minutes wasn't that great, but it did help in bringing Australia to the awareness of Parkour. There has been a largew influx of noobs. So far I've only experienced it on the forums, but I heard that the last Melbourne class had 95 people attend, as opposed to the usual 25. I wonder if the same will be for us for our class on monday.

First Class

Today I taught class at Belco. It was the first class that I could participate in, through giving demonstrations and such. We had a much bigger turn out than usual, 8 people! 5 of them were new to the classes, which was really good. We also had the first girl to come, and another guy who seemed to be in his early 40s late 30s. It just comes to show that people from all ages are interested in parkour.

While demonstrating rolls, I found that my rolls have improved since 8 months ago. I have holidays next week, and I hope to train every day. I will start with drilling the basics, so as to restrat my life as a traceur properly. From the bottom to the top.

Born Again Traceur

I finally gained permission to train parkour again. I haven't performed any parkour for about 9 months now, due to work related restrictions. This then means that i probably have lost a reasonable about of skill, as well as body conditioning, so I have made a plan.

When I first started parkour back in 2004, I went straight to the big stuff and didn't care much about the philosophy. This took a toll on my body, especially my knees.

I know that I've had a big break from parkour, and that my body won't be able to handle getting straight abck into the big stuff, so I'm going to start fresh. Born again traceur. I'm going to start small, like any other noob, and slowly build back up to the bigger and better things. Hopefully this will properly condition my body for parkour training, as I want to be able to stay in this game for a while.

This is going to be my blog detailing my training as a born again traceur. It will only contain parkour related training, as my other training is work related.
